Write for us
It's rare to find truly independent media these days, which is why The Boston Underground is such a great opportunity for you to get heard. Investigative journalism is always fun, but we also want your opinions on the anti-war movement, activism in Boston, what's going on at your school, anarchy, and pretty much anything else you want to write about. We're also looking for reviews of books, movies, shows, and events. We're publishing this newspaper for you, so please take advantage of us.
Since this newspaper is a voice for pre-existing community activist groups and/or projects, we need people who are excited about grassroots activism to attend and report on different events in and around Boston. It is hard to find a city in this day and age that is not riddled with apathy, however, there are also strong roots of resistance that exist and show themselves all the time - it is these roots that we would like to expose and make visible so that more of our Boston communities are encouraged to struggle for justice!
Editing, Layout, Outreach
You don't have to be a writer in order to help out! Articles that filter through our collective need to be edited, often times more than once. During the last days before publishing, we need help with layout. If you know anything about InDesign, things that are aesthetically pleasing, or just love to drink lots of coffee and stay up all night in a fit of delirium - we enjoy company! We are also in the process of compiling an extensive list of community groups, organizations, and/or projects in Boston and still need help contacting them and getting all of Boston involved.
Distribution
One of our biggest problems right now is getting the paper where people will read it. We print 3000 copies every month and try to distribute to as many schools and neighborhoods as possible. If you frequent an area that never has Undergrounds in it and can help us put them there, please contact us. We like to drop stacks off in coffee shops, books stores, restaurants, libraries, all over college campuses (as long as they won't get thrown out), and anywhere else where we might reach people. We are also trying to keep them supplied with all the organizations that we are in contact with, which are scattered all over Boston. So if you have a bike and like to ride it, you could definitely help us out.
Join the collective
The Boston Underground is a very loose collective of anywhere from 8 to 20 people, and we're always looking for more people to help us out! The easiest way to join us is to just show up at one of our open meetings that take place every Sunday night at 9pm at the Community Church of Boston at 565 Boylston Street. Everyone is welcome.
All of our decisions are made collectively at the meetings. Some of the tasks that we do to keep The Underground on the streets every month include writing and editing articles, laying out the paper with desktop publishing software, copyediting, fundraising, partying, as well as countless other things. It's a hell of a lot of fun.
Get on our mailing list(s)
The discuss list is an internal mailing list for collective members to talk about managing this newspaper in between our weekly meetings. If you're thinking of joining us, feel free to join this list to see what sort of work we do. Our meeting notes also get mailed to this list (hopefully on time).
